Headaches and Migraines – Relief Update

Palmer Chiropractic in Richmond Hill –  Most headaches are not fatal but they negatively impact the quality of our lives. In bad cases,  headaches restrict our occupation and social life. Headaches have a wide range of causes including infection, hangovers, mal-nourishment, lack of sleep and even serious conditions, such as subluxations, aneurysms, tumors, and TIAs.

The most common headaches include tension and migraine, which are associated with nervous system disorders. Almost 280 million people in the U.S. will experience some type of headache. Nearly 14 million people experience headaches on a near-daily basis (one in five women and one in twenty men, experience migraine headaches). About 10% of school-age children suffer from migraines. American employers lose more than $13 billion each year as a result of 113 million lost work days.  Migraines cost employers and employees billions of dollars.

In a migraine headache, the blood vessel on the outside of the skull under the skin of the temple enlarges. When this occurs, nerves around the artery stretches and releases compounds that cause irritation and severe pain. The larger the blood vessel gets, the more intense the pain.

Chiropractor - Adjustment

Most people know Chiropractic care can benefit patients for tension/cervicogenic headaches. But, can Chiropractic care help migraines too? Here’s what research dating all the way back to 1997 says… The study, published in the Journal Of Manipulative And Physiological Therapeutics (2011), compared  medication, spinal adjustments, and the combination of both medication and adjustments. There was a 4 week baseline period, followed by 8 weeks of treatment and then 4 weeks of follow-up on a total of 218 patients diagnosed with migraine headaches.

RESULTS: “Clinically important improvement was observed in both primary and secondary outcomes in all three study groups over time. The reduction in headache index scores during treatment compared with baseline was 49% for amitriptyline, 40% for spinal manipulation, and 41% for the combined group. During the post-treatment follow-up period, the reduction from baseline was 24% for amitriptyline, 42% for spinal manipulation, and 25% for the combined group.”

CONCLUSION: “There was no advantage to combining amitriptyline and spinal manipulation for the treatment of migraine headaches. Spinal manipulation seemed to be as effective as a well-established and efficacious treatment (amitriptyline). And on the basis of a benign side effects profile, it should be considered a treatment option for patients with frequent migraine headaches.”

Chiropractic is the science and art of finding and correcting vertebra that are misplaced and causing neurological dysfunction. By moving the vertebra back to its normal position and allowing the command and control system of the body (nervous system) to function at optimum performance, your body is free to function as it should. Hyperkyphosis can lead to an early death

As we get older posture  begins to decline in some, but if you take into effect the computer age , poor posture in our society is becoming an epidemic. Just go into our schools and see what our kids look like or pop into your teenagers room while they’re mindlessly staring into the computer. How heavy is your teenagers head getting in the picture to the right?

Recently, we had a 9 year old boy with slouched posture and 2 inches of head projection in a natural standing position. He suffers from asthma and ear aches. (we’ll post more on him as he progresses)

Teens are not the only vulnerable population, you are also. For every inch of head projection, you are putting 10 pounds of extra force on the spine. Two inches is equivalent to putting a 20 weight on top of your head while in a good posture.

A group that may be in an even higher risk group is women with breast augmentations. As we posted earlier about the possibilities of breast augmentation leading to hyperkyphosis, now we find a health study from 2009 Annals of Internal Medicine that points to worse possibilities. According to the hyperkyphosis study, that just the mere presence of a widows hump/poor  posture leads to early deaths without any other issues.

Posture can be corrected even in the bad environments, but first you must change the environment.

Here is an example of the perfect conceptual computer environment with a base price of $2750 that can easily exceed $10,000 with the comfort package.

Since most of us don’t have 10k laying around, try these:

  1. Raise the monitor so they aren’t looking down at it (straight ahead in a nice posture)
  2. Work on correcting posture in seated and standing positions
  3. Do thoracic extension exercises that do not put strain on the spine
  4. Go to Straighten Up America  for great activities for all ages
  5. Consult your local chiropractor for help

Your chiropractor can locate and correct spinal misalignment that causes nervous system dysfunction.  Dysfunction in the nervous system can lead to poor muscle tone that regulates your posture. He or she can also recommend thing you may change in your environment that are not covered in the blog.

Act today, tomorrow is always a day away.

How many long term studies have been done on augmentation procedures and what is the efficacy of the procures in long term protocols?

Is it Healthcare? or really a Disease Care System?

In today’s society we use this word “health” very freely without regards to real meaning.

Noah Webster wrote in his original version of the Webster’s Dictionary “HEALTH, n. helth. [from heal.] That state of an animal or living body, in which the parts are sound, well organized and disposed, and in which they all perform freely their natural functions.”, he does go further to speak about plants, animals, and religious health.

Current Webster’s definition “a : the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit;especially : freedom from physical disease or pain”

World.Health.Organization – Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

The part that confuses me is the “in which they(parts) all perform freely their natural function.” because we as a society have tried to circumvent the natural function portion of the definition of health and it (natural function) has been deleted from the current Websters Dictionary and substituted with “sound”.

Let’s see if these statements are true or false:

  1. There is a man who takes statin drugs to change the cholesterol in his body. These drugs help him with natural function.
  2. There is a  man who takes statin drugs to change the cholesterol in his body. These drugs help him to remain sound.

#2 is the current all0pathic(medical) model, where the medicines are distributed to try to stabilize a body that has dysfunction and side effects are minor.

#1 is actually false. To help with natural function, the substance would have to come from nature in a normal environment. Examples an orange, apple, broccoli, etc. Statin pharmaceuticals come from a lab and block functions in the body and as time goes on we start to see the unintended consequences like diabetes.

Here is a list of drugs that were approved by the FDA but now the unintended consequences have  landed many people in the hospitals and/or graves prematurely: Celexa,Lexapro,Fosmax, Zoloft, Topamax, Meridia, Accutane, Wellbutrin,   Paxil, Depakote, Reglan to name a few.

Health does not come from a bottle. It comes from inside all of us. It starts with drinking clean water (your body weight / 2 = ounces per day recommended), eating a balanced diet (preferably the Paleo Diet), getting 8 hours of restful sleep (on your back), brisk 30 minutes of exercise 5x a week, and keeping your command and control system (the nervous system) free of interference.

For 117 years chiropractors have been adjusting the spine to clear interference with the nervous system. As science catches up to the chiropractic adjustment, the scientific world is validating what chiropractors have been saying for over a century.

Scientific advancements that have validated just a fraction of what chiropractors have known for years:

Neck Pain   Spinal Manipulation, Medication, or Home Exercise  for  Neck Pain

Headaches   Dose response and efficacy of spinal manipulation for chronic  headache

Asthma   Chronic pediatric asthma and chiropractic spinal manipulation
